Red Legend, 2018
Single-channel video in an infinite loop, color, sound.
Red Legend (also known as Legend of Wang Gong) is a local folklore from the Fu-Jou area. According to the legend, during the Japanese occupation, Fu-Jou, which was still predominantly farmland, suddenly suffered from a red beetle infestation. The villagers, who were instructed in a dream, invited the Bao-Yi Da-Fu from Hsi-Chih to perform a ritual procession to ward off the disaster. To this day, Fu-Jou continues the tradition of inviting Bao-Yi Da-Fu to perform the ritual procession on the 17th day of the lunar month of October each year.
This video work uses this legend as its text and incorporates recent complex local issues in Fu-Jou for adaptation and reinterpretation.
